Dusty plasmas are ionized gases containing small particles of solid matter. They occur in space, plasma processing discharges, laboratory plasmas, and in microgravity experiments.

Interest in the field has grown rapidly since the first U.S. workshop on dusty plasmas in the early 1980's. The previous meeting in the series was held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in April  2000. We are pleased to announce that in 2001, the workshop will return to Iowa City, where the 4th Workshop in this series was held. The Department of Physics and Astronomy at  The University of Iowa  will be the host organization.

As in other series workshops, the scope of this meeting covers the complete range of dusty plasma physics phenomena: both basic and applied science topics, including laboratory experiments, space observations, theory, simulations, and microgravity experiments. The  meeting format will include both oral and poster sessions, with plenty of time for discussion. Lunches and dinners will be together.

The meeting will be held at the Iowa Memorial Union on the campus of The University of Iowa. This is a pleasant location overlooking the Iowa River, in the center of Iowa City, where  museums, cultural attractions, and events  can be found. Tourist attractions within a 25 minute drive include the Amana Colonies and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum. 

The Weather in Iowa City in late May is good, with an average daytime high of 74 F (23 C) and an average nightly low of 52 F (11 C). On average, 20 of the 31 days of May have zero precipitation.

The meeting will begin Monday morning, and end before noon Wednesday. Tours of laboratories at The University of Iowa will be given Wednesday afternoon for those who stay.

An historical list of all the earlier workshops & international conferences is here. To avoid conflicting with an international conference in Durban (South Africa) May 2002, this time the workshop will be held after one year. The dates May 21-23 were determined by the availability of rooms, good weather, the IEEE Conference on Plasma Science and the AGU meeting.
